Where to start my planning.

Marvel Africa Safaris understands that booking an African Safari is a big decision and that anyone thinking of it has several questions. We would like to be there for you all the way, from the moment you start planning till the day your precious trophies are against your wall in your home.

Here is short STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE of how it works and we will personally walk with you through every facet.

STEP ONE:

DECIDING ON A SAFARI OR WHAT TROPHIES TO HUNT

# Choose one of our standard hunting packages , which are fully inclusive of:

  • Daily rate (Includes: Accommodation, meals, land transportation & the services of an experienced professional hunter plus 14% government tax on the daily rate)
  • Trophy fees for the animals, which are specified in the package.

OR

#Send us your wish list and we will customize your own ALL-INCLUSIVE package for you

OR

#Opt for a Daily Rate Safari:

  • Daily rate (Includes: Accommodation, meals, land transportation & the services of an experienced professional hunter plus 14% government tax on the daily rate)
  • Trophy fees for the animals that YOU CHOOSE to hunt as the opportunity arise ("a la carte" as per our 2013 pricelist

TAKE NOTE:

In any of the above cases, additional trophies can be added at the pricelist rate.

Guests are met upon arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and are returned there, upon completion of the Safari. We strive to offer you exceptional quality at competitive prices.

Both the standard packages and customized packages are flexible –  animals in a package may be exchanged for an/a animal/s of similar value that occur in the same geographical area.

STEP TWO:

BOOKING THE SAFARI

When you have selected the safari you would like to book, the safari agreement, providing all the details of your upcoming safari, will be finalized and signed and you will be required to pay the deposit as specified by the package selected or the quote received, depending on the nature of the safari.

STEP THREE:

BOOKING THE AIRFARE FOR YOUR AFRICAN SAFARI

After we have agreed on the date of your safari and the amount of days you are to be here in South Africa you can go ahead in booking your airline ticket.

TAKE NOTE: The further ahead your book your ticket the better price you'll get!

A direct flight to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is recommended either with Delta departing from Atlanta or South African Airways departing from Washington Dulles or JFK New York. Please communicate with us during this process.

STEP FOUR:

By now everything is in place and lined up for your upcoming safari!! The "preparation time" and the build up to your safari is all a part of what makes hunting in Africa addictive.

Please feel free to e-mail us any time if you have any questions!

What to pack for your South African hunting safari:

If the following guidelines are used, packing your bags won't be a headache. If you are planning only for the safari, don't overload! The items most obviously needed and most frequently needed will be listed. Apart from your traveling agent's prerequisites, you really don't need to pack much more than the following:

Clothing and general accessories:

  • Very informal, cotton-type material of clothing in plain and neutral colours (and to name some colours, brown, green or khaki). The South African bush is a combination of pale green, light yellow and brown in the southern hemisphere wintertime. Thorns will definitely be part of the safari-experience. The hunting season runs from April to October. Don't overspend too much on expensive safari clothes. We do your laundry on a daily basis. A pair of short pants and a t-shirt or two may help as well.
  • Good, thick soiled boots that have been worn some time already. Never go on a hunt in a new pair of boots! The boots needn't be the military type, but should suffice if it could cover the ankles. Thick socks as well, also remember to bring along a few pairs. The bush/thorns/seeds/grass might (more than likely will) stick on them and scratch you, so wearing the same pair over and over again will become uncomfortable. A pair of slip on sandals for camp will do as well.
  • One solid jacket and a jersey or pullover for the cold nights may be considered as essential. Although the days are still quite warm in winter, the night temperatures may drop to freezing point. (The southern provinces may drop even to - 7 below zero at night in winter times, but the northern provinces are warmer at nights).
  • A raincoat in hunting season isn't essential at all, in-fact, Swim gear may come in handy, even in winter times in the northern areas during daytime.
  • Don't forget your medical prescriptions. Bring along a list of regular medication from your pharmacist. South African pharmacies will be able to provide the same or identical brands of medicines for you.
    - Read more about medical guidelines -
  • Very high rated sunblock/sunscreen fluid as well as a solid hat. (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • An electrical adapter to facilitate the standard South African 220 Volts power source. Most outfitters do have those adapters in camp (Including Marvel Africa Safari's).
  • Good anti-mosquito spray, balm, coils or helpful measures to take against insects if you like.
  • The usual toiletries with towel. (Marvel Africa Safaris have bath towels and soap available at our main camp in each chalet)
  • A small but durable torch
  • Whatever torch/camera/laptop/i-pod etc. you bring along, remember your batteries/power supply/memory cards/adapters etc.

Hunting accessories:

  • Not more than 200 rounds of ammunition per rifle (maximum of 4 firearms per person)
  • Rifle(s) or gun(s) as was finalized with the authorities and outfitter
    -Read more about rifle's & calibers -
  • Gun cleaning kit (if the firearm is a standard type, this is optional)
  • A pocket knife

Some useful optional :

  • Camera and films/video camera and accessories
    -Read more about photography-
  • Mobile phone (if arrangements with the service provider have been made to do international calls)
  • Small binoculars
  • A pair of ultra violet blocking sunglasses
  • Field guides (of birds or mammals, insects or reptiles)
  • Laptop (but check this and the need to move around other electronic devises with your outfitter first. Most of them have access to a lot of the normal technological services (like e-mail, internet, fax, etc.)
